Common Conflict Resolution Techniques in Negotiations

Negotiations can be challenging and conflicts are bound to arise. We aren't going to overcomplicate this one. Here are some common conflict resolution techniques used during negotiations:

Collaboration: This technique involves both parties working together to find a mutually beneficial solution. It requires open communication, active listening, and an understanding of each other's needs and interests.

Compromise: In this technique, both parties give up something they want to reach a middle ground that is acceptable to both parties. It requires flexibility and a willingness to make concessions.

Avoidance: Sometimes, the best way to resolve a conflict is by avoiding it altogether. This technique involves postponing the negotiation until later or finding an alternative solution that does not require negotiation.

Competition: This technique involves one party trying to "win" the negotiation at the expense of the other party. It can be effective in certain situations but may lead to a breakdown in the relationship between the parties involved.

Remember some of the drawbacks to this technique from our earlier post.

Accommodation: In this technique, one party gives in completely to the demands of the other party. It can be useful when maintaining a relationship with the other party is more important than achieving your goals.

By understanding these common conflict resolution techniques and knowing when to use them during negotiations, you can improve your chances of reaching successful outcomes while maintaining positive relationships with those involved.
